The Lex Talionis, or the "Law of Retribution" legislates the principle that the penalty should be proportionate to the crime. Inasmuch as the Lex Talionis describes literal destruction of the body by a judicial ruling, it is understood to be limited by Deuteronomy 25:1-3.
