Cutting off hand as punishment

This law shows an attempt to injure a man's procreative ability. In Biblical law, a proven attempt at a crime is treated the same as the crime itself (e.g. the false witness penalty in Deut. 19:16ff).
If the assailant were a man, there would be a clear talion ("eye for eye") equivalent. This would already be covered by the law against injury. Since the assailant is a woman, this law specifies that her hand is the talion equivalant for the penalty. The parties could negotiate monetary restitution, or the victim could simply demand the full talion equivalent.
