Classification

The Command

This passage contains a positive command, directed toward Israel: "Today is a sabbath; everyone stay in his place. Let nobody go out of his place on the seventh day.".

Categories

This command is part of the Moral Law. It is part of a series of commands which are limited in scope to the time which Israel would spend in that situation, gathering manna from the ground (One-time Commands). And it is Typological/Ceremonial in nature.

These laws contribute to an understanding of Food because it is in a section where God is providing them with food (manna), Sabbath because they are to gather twice as much in preparation for the sabbath, and Corporate Judgment because God says in this passage that he indends this to test Israel's obedience to him.

Fulfillment

The immediate command was fulfilled by Israel in the wilderness. It finds its greater fulfillment in Jesus, who enables us to enter that ultimate rest in heaven (see Hebrews 3:7 through 4:13).
