On vicarious punishment

From Theonomy Wiki

16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers. Every man shall be put to death for his own sin. Deuteronomy 24:16WEB

In other ANE law systems, such as the Code of Hammurabi, it was common to punish the children for the crimes of the fathers. God's law prohibits man from exacting vicarious capital punishment. God himself may visit judgment upon succeeding generations, allowing the consequences of the parents sin to cross generational boundaries (Exod 20:5), but He is merciful when the children repent and follow His ways (Jer 18:7-8; Ezek 18:1-9).
