Ze breken ons uit onze culturele vooroordelen. Ze zorgen ervoor dat we de wereld door een ander waardesysteem zien. We beginnen met Mattheüs 15, waar de schriftgeleerden (die de "wetsdienaren" van de eerste eeuw waren) van Jeruzalem naar Gennesaret (een streek in de buurt van Galilea) waren gereisd. Nu trotseerden deze onruststokers de "traditie van de oudsten": {{:Scriptblock|Matthew 15:2}} Natuurlijk is er geen bijbelse wet die voorschrijft dat iemand zijn handen moet wassen voor het eten. Dit was een regel die door de Farizeeën werd verzonnen, en Jezus stond zijn discipelen opzettelijk toe deze te breken. Jezus antwoordde: {{:Scriptblock|Matthew 15:3-4}} Merk op hoe Jezus de Farizeeën berispte met behulp van de Bijbelse wet. Hij citeerde twee geboden uit de Hebreeuwse Schrift: het vijfde gebod (Exodus 20:12) en een ander gebod uit de wet dat de burgerlijke doodstraf oplegt voor het breken van het vijfde gebod op een bijzonder gruwelijke manier (vervloeking van je vader of moeder, Leviticus 20:9).<ref>Er is ook een verplichte doodstraf voor het slaan van je vader of moeder: Exodus 21:15. Paulus verwees in 1 Tim gunstig naar deze wet. 1:9.</ref> ===Wie is de hypocriet?=== Laten we gewoon bevestigen wat Jezus zegt over "Corban". Je kunt hierover lezen in elk commentaar en een goede uitleg krijgen. In principe wijst Jezus op een traditie die de Farizeeën onderwijzen, die mensen toestaat hun ouders te onteren. Vervolgens zegt Jezus: {{:Scriptblock|Matthew 15:7}} Jezus had de Farizeeën al meerdere malen aangeduid als "huichelaars": Matt. 6:2, 6:5, 6:16. Vergeet niet wat Jezus al in het openbaar had verkondigd: {{:Scriptblock|Matthew 5:17-19}} In de huidige uitwisseling met de schriftgeleerden en Farizeeërs had Jezus zojuist geciteerd uit Gods geboden (inclusief het doodstrafgebod) om aan te tonen dat zij het bevel van God "nietig" maakten door hun traditie. Dus hier is de vraag: Als Jezus daadwerkelijk de doodstraf zou komen afschaffen voor het vervloeken van zijn ouders, zou Jezus dan niet de echte hypocriet zijn, en niet de Farizeeën? ===Een preek die je waarschijnlijk nooit zult horen=== Je mag nooit in je leven een preek horen over deze uitwisseling die Jezus had met de schriftgeleerden en Farizeeërs, waarin gesproken wordt over Jezus die deze doodstraf steunt. Je zult misschien genoeg preken horen over Jezus en de vrouw die op overspel is betrapt (uit Johannes 8), omdat die passage voor antinomianen gemakkelijker is om te perverteren. Maar je kunt Matt niet op die manier behandelen. 15:3-5, je kunt het alleen maar verdoezelen. God gaf ons het Vijfde Gebod ("eer uw vader en moeder") om de instelling van het gezin te handhaven, die de fundamentele culturele instelling van de menselijke beschaving is. Zoals Paulus zegt, is het het eerste (maar niet het laatste) gebod met een belofte: {{#scripture:Eph 6:3|scriptrefstyle=paren}}. God gaf ons het Achtste Gebod ("Gij zult geen overspel plegen") om het huwelijksverbond te handhaven, dat het verbond is dat het gezin vormt. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat hij er ook een verplichte doodstraf aan verbonden heeft: Leviticus 20:18 God gaf ons het Negende gebod ("Gij zult geen valse getuigenis afleggen") om de integriteit van het Bijbelse rechtssysteem, dat gebaseerd is op getuigenverklaringen, te handhaven. Ook hier vinden we een doodstraf nodig voor het afleggen van een vals getuigenis in doodshoofdzaken: Deut. 19:18-21. God hecht slechts aan een klein aantal van zijn geboden. Een burgerlijke doodstraf, gekoppeld aan een gebod, laat zien hoe belangrijk het is om deze niet te breken. In de Bijbelse wet bijvoorbeeld, als je per ongeluk (of zelfs met opzet, omdat je uitgehongerd was) een dier at dat ceremonieel "onrein" was, zou je je kleren moeten wassen, en je zou ceremonieel "onrein" zijn tot 's avonds (Leviticus 11:40). Dat is alles. En er was geen civiele handhaving van deze straf. Als je iemands schaap stal en betrapt werd, zou je twee schapen moeten terugbetalen (Exodus 22:4). Vergelijk dit met het Britse gewoonterecht, waarin het stelen van een schaap (geclassificeerd als "misdrijf diefstal") je de doodstraf opleverde. In de Bijbelse wet is er nooit een doodstraf voor eigendomsdelicten. Ze worden altijd afgehandeld door teruggave aan de benadeelde partij (''niet'' teruggave aan de civiele overheid). Dan is er nog een categorie van misdaden die zo bedreigend zijn voor de sociale orde en de beschaving dat God de mensen heeft bevolen om er met de ultieme straf, de dood, mee om te gaan. Moord, verkrachting, overspel, ontvoering, het afleggen van een valse getuigenis in een kapitaalproces, en andere. Een van deze anderen vervloekte zijn vader of moeder. Een ander sloeg zijn vader of moeder. God waardeert de integriteit van het gezin en het respect voor het ouderlijk gezag zozeer dat hij deze schendingen van het gezin gelijkstelt aan moord. Als je denkt dat de doodstraf voor het slaan of vervloeken van je ouders "te hard is", dan laat je zien dat je waardensysteem niet overeenkomt met het waardensysteem van YHWH. Het is ook niet zoals het waardensysteem van Jezus, want hij is YHWH en hij citeerde dit bevel met instemming.
