This passage describes one of the first acts of service which God was pleased to require of Adam -- that he name every beast and bird. It is hereby understood that man is not simply expected to till the ground and fertilize the garden, but man is also expected to learn about the garden and understand it. Indeed, such exercise in learning about nature is completely necessary in order for man to exercise dominion over the earth.
