It comes as a surprise to many people that there are very few laws about the office of the king in Biblical law (see Deut. 17:15-20). This can be traced to the fact that YHWH was always supposed to be the only king, and human kings were only provided as a form of judgement upon the wickedness of the people for requesting a king "like the Gentiles" (1 Samuel 8).
