La calunnia è una falsa dichiarazione su qualcuno che potrebbe danneggiare la sua reputazione in qualche modo. Un'affermazione calunniosa deve essere falsa in un modo che potrebbe effettivamente essere creduto da una persona ragionevole. Quindi, ad esempio, chiamare qualcuno "un asino" - sebbene letteralmente falso - non è calunnia. Nessuna persona ragionevole crederebbe che un essere umano sia letteralmente un asino. Ad esempio, Gesù chiamò Erode una "volpe" e i farisei una "nidiata di vipere":
