18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth: 20 and blessed be God Most High, who hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him a tenth of all.

The Principle

This passage contains the first instance of a tithe, given to a priest of God Most High.

Categories

This passage is part of the Principles and Definitions. It affects our understanding of the Tithe.

Fulfillment

The principle of the tithe is fulfilled in its legal application to the Levitical priesthood, as Jesus is a priest after the Melchizedek priesthood. The Melchizedek priest received his tithe from Abraham without legally requiring it of him; Christians also are expected to give freely to Jesus because of his greatness and their love for him.
